PBG 102 Fundamentals of Genetics 2+1 Semester I
Course Objectives: This class will provide an understanding of the principles and concepts of genetics. Specific objectives of this course are to provide an understanding and apply the principles of inheritance as formulated by Mendel and to study the structure and function of the DNA molecule and its functional role in encoding genetic material.
Course Contents: Pre-and Post-Mendelian concepts of heredity.Mendelian principles of heredity. Architecture of chromosome- morphology, special types of chromosomes. Chromosomal theory of inheritance - cell cycle and cell division (mitosis and meiosis). Probability and Chi-square test. Dominance relationships.Epistatic interactions with example. Multiple alleles- blood group genetics, pleiotropism and pseudoalleles. Sex determination, sex linkage, sex limited and sex influenced traits. Linkage and its estimation. Crossing over mechanisms. Chromosome mapping. Structural and numerical variations in chromosome and their implications (genetic disorders).Use of haploids, dihaploids and doubled haploids in genetics. Mutation - classification, methods of inducing mutations, CLB technique, mutagenic agents. Qualitative and quantitative traits - polygenes and continuous variations, multiple factor hypothesis. Cytoplasmic inheritance.Nature, structure and replication of genetic material. Protein synthesis, transcription and translational mechanism of genetic material. Gene concept - gene structure, function and regulation, Lac and Trp operons.
Note: This is an introductory course for 1styr students of B. Sc. Hort. (Hons.) programme.
